What The Office taught us about Holidays in the Workplace: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
Michael Scott may be the “World’s Best Boss” at Dunder Mifflin but we’re here to tell you how to put your best HR foot forward, especially around the holidays. We’re here to ask: WHAT WOULD HOLLY FLACK DO?
The holidays are always a fun time around the workplace.
It’s a chance for owners, management and employees to come together
and celebrate the season of giving and thanks.
However, as Michael Gary Scott has shown us in almost every episode of The Office ever made, there is always room for a little improvement when it comes to human resources and workplace policies and procedures around the holidays.
Let’s talk about the lessons we’ve learned from The Office and how these can be applied in our workplace to avoid getting coal in our stockings (or worse, a lawsuit and major HR headache).
DON’T: Cancel regular holiday activities for fear of offending some.
DO: Invite input from staff to create welcoming holiday events for all.
DON’T: Allow a poisoned work environment to develop at work holiday events.
DO: Review/Update Workplace Violence and Harassment Policies + Programs
DON’T: Allow staff/guests to drive home from workplace events while inebriated.
DO: Provide Transportation from Work Holiday Events Where Alcohol Is Served
DON’T: let yourself fall into HR mishaps at the holidays. DEVEAU LAW can help.
DO: Have fun. It’s about showing your employees you appreciate them.
